Our Chapel Hill Area OBGYN With In-house Lab Testing
At Chapel Hill OBGYN, we’re pleased to be an OBGYN with in-house lab testing, offering not only convenience, but seamless care; our gynecologists in Durham and Chapel Hill are able to see a comprehensive profile of your overall health.
Because we’re an OBGYN with in-house lab testing, you don’t have to go to several different locations to get blood drawn for testing. The results of your blood work are seamlessly transferred to our OBGYNs in Chapel Hill or Durham.
We believe that annual blood work is a vital part of your annual exam.
What Lab Tests Do Gynecologists Do?
Our gynecologists will frequently order lab tests to carefully monitor your health. We conveniently draw blood work and send it out for testing. That means you don’t have to make an extra trip to an independent lab to get blood drawn. When the results come back, we will carefully and completely review it with you.
Those tests may include:
- Complete blood counts
- Hormone levels
- Testing for sexually transmitted diseases
- Tests to diagnose conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome
We also do some in-house lab testing for your convenience. These include:
- Pregnancy tests
- Wet mounts (these are done to look for yeast infections and BV)
- Urinalysis
These are some of the lab tests we conduct. We always strive for excellence and accuracy for your convenience.
What Is Tested in Your Annual Blood Work at an OBGYN With In-House Lab Testing?
Your annual blood work helps us check for any health problems such as diabetes, anemia, and high cholesterol. These evaluations almost always include a CBC.
What Is Included with a CBC?
A complete blood count (CBC) and metabolic profile gives a complete picture of your health that we use to help tailor a care plan for you.
A CBC includes:
- The number of red blood cells and white blood cells
- Measurement of your cholesterol
- Evaluation of liver functions
- Examination of your fasting blood sugar levels. We use this to see if you are at risk for developing diabetes
- Measurement of your thyroid function
- Examination of hormonal levels
- Evaluation of how well your kidneys are functioning
As mentioned earlier, we will draw your blood and easily send it out for testing if you need any of these evaluations.
What Is Included in a Woman’s Annual Exam?
During your annual exam, we will generally:
- Perform a Pap smear if you are due for one (these are generally done every 3 to 5 years)
- Conduct a pelvic exam
- Provide a breast exam
- Conduct a complete “head to toe” physical
These exams are vital to watch for signs of cancer in order to detect the disease early, when it’s at its most treatable and beatable stage.
We will also take this time to ask you some questions about your general well-being. If you have concerns about particular issues—such as irregular periods —we want to know!
What Blood Tests Should You Have Regularly? What Labs Need to Be Checked at an OBGYN with In-House Lab Testing?
As we mentioned earlier, a CBC and complete metabolic profile are important, as well as a lipid panel. A lipid panel checks for cholesterol levels.
You should also have a hemoglobin A1C, which evaluates your blood sugar over time.
However, it’s important to note that with medicine, there is no “one size fits all.” We take a customized approach to wellness. This means that which blood tests are evaluated will depend upon a lot of factors, including family history and personal history.
Many of these lab tests may be done every 3 to 5 years depending upon your individual situation.
