Meet the Team – Lydia Schmittel

Chapel Hill Obstetrics & Gynecology Our Practice

Giving birth is always transformative, but for Certified Nurse Midwife Lydia Schmittel, it was a turning point in her life in more ways than one—it pointed her toward a career in midwifery.

“After the birth of my first two children I realized how transformative giving birth can be, and how deeply the birth attendant can influence a woman’s perception of her capabilities,” she said. “I decided to become a midwife to help provide women with safe, satisfying and empowering care experiences. I realize using that same care philosophy I can help women understand their bodies and improve their health.”

Schmittel earned her degree in biology and was a certified teacher, which was the perfect educational background for assisting and inspiring others through her new role as health care provider. Throughout her career path, she found that the greatest and most rewarding part of her job was helping others.

“The strength of women inspires me daily, as do the many midwives I’ve been privileged to receive care from, work alongside, and learn from,” she said.

One of the books that has had the greatest influence on her life is “Spiritual Midwifery” by Ina May Gaskin.

“This helped me prepare for the birth of my second child and helped me to understand that I wasn’t the only one who felt the experience of giving birth was hugely important and impactful on my self-efficacy and mothering,” she said.

Outside of work, she enjoys gardening, traveling and knitting. She cherishes the outdoor adventures her family does together, particularly their annual week-long camping trip.

You may be surprised to know she previously owned an online knitting and crocheting business selling wool pants, shorts, and skirts for use as cloth diaper covers.

We are thrilled to have Schmittel as a part of our team.
