Meet Our Physicians: Dr. Pat Chappell

Chapel Hill Obstetrics & Gynecology All Articles, Our Practice

It may not have been what your typical 11 or 12-year-old would read—-but for Dr. Chappell, discovering the biographies of famous physicians fostered a love of learning and a passion for science classes that would shape her career choice.

She has been with Chapel Hill OBGYN for more than 30 years, providing compassionate care for hundreds of women throughout the decades.

“From the age of 11 or 12 I thought I wanted to be a doctor,” she said. “I read biographies of famous physicians and loved my science classes. By the time I went to college, I was sure that I wanted to be in medicine.”

“By the time I went to medical school, I knew I was headed for women’s health. As time went on and I found out what medicine was really about I found that being an obstetrician-gynecologist allowed me to combine all the parts of medicine that interested me: surgery, delivering babies, taking care of women, and having long-term relationships with my patients. I never looked back,” she said.

“I have enjoyed all of the things that led me to OBGYN and more. The surprise that I discovered early on is the fascinating, wonderful women that I have the privilege of knowing in all phases of their lives and the satisfaction of having these relationships, sometimes over many years, sometimes for just a few years. Serving women, for me, is truly a calling,” she said.
